The Mysterious Brugmansia Y

The Y is nothing more than a stem that split into 2 and branched off in different directions. This is one of the indications of what is called flowering wood. The reason people are so excited about Yd wood is because it means the plant is going to produce a flower.

What you see here, outlined in blue are old Ys

Here is younger wood. Note the yellow Ys and see the orange Y branching off of the yellow Y?

Asymmetrical Leaves

The other indication of flowering wood

As you can see in these pictures, one side of the leaf is shorter than the other. This indicates the blooming hormone has become present and can appear before a Y or just before a bud appears. They can take on different shapes so check for any uneven leaf with a short stem side. This is another indicator of flowering wood.

Tiny Buds

Once you start seeing the Ys and asymmetrical leaves, if you look closely you will see the tiny bud. The Happy Dance is not mandatory but encouraged.
